Abstract: The purpose of this course is to give the student an overview of the American government from the historical underpinnings to the current political environment.

Audience: Undergraduate college students and high school students

Chapter 1 describes key concepts in the US government including the Declaration of Independence, Articles of Confederation, and the Constitution. Also, this chapter describes the historical underpinnings of the US government.

Chapter 2 describes the branches of government: Congress, the executive branch, and the Supreme Court.

Chapter 3 articulates the differences between civil liberties and civil rights.

Chapter 4 describes the political parties including their histories, objectives, organizational structures, and impact on the American political process.

Chapter 5 recognizes and describes the factors leading to an individual’s unique political socialization along with common voting trends.
